Not everyone can have 10 feet high ceilings and that’s okay! That’s why we’re here to give tips and tricks on how to make your walls feel taller. When you have low ceilings, it blocks light and creates a dark and gloomy mood. Studies have proven that high ceilings improve your mood, creativity, and a higher resale value. Below are 5 ways to make your walls feel taller!
1. Mirrors
Using full-length mirrors can create the illusion of higher ceilings. Mirrors are excellent at creating false appearances like making a space bigger than it really is. The light that a mirror bounces tricks the eye to make a room look larger than it really is.
2. Baseboards & Crown Molding
Paint your baseboards and crown molding the same color as your walls. When you do that you are tricking the eye into visually extending the wall a couple of inches on both the top and bottom space which is usually white. It instantly tricks your eye into thinking the walls are 8-12 inches taller than normal walls. It’s a little detail that can make a huge difference!
3. Kitchen Cabinets
The best way to make your kitchen ceiling appear higher is by bringing your cabinets all the way up to the ceiling. Most people can’t access their top cabinets and use a stool anyways. Trust me! It’s worth the investment. Taking your cabinets to the ceiling draws your eyes upward.
4. Curtains
Hang your curtains as close to the ceiling as you can get while still allowing the curtains to touch the floor. This will create an illusion of more height than there really is. If your curtains appear to start floating, then it is too short and you need longer curtains. A ripple-fold detail on your curtains will also emphasize height even more with consistent vertical detail. Typically, a curtain rod is mounted 4″ – 6″ above your window frame. However, to make your room and window appear taller, you can hang curtains anywhere between 6″ – 12″ above the window frame.
5. Vertical Feature Walls
When doing a feature wall, try to do a vertical design. The vertical lines will direct the eye upward creating the illusion of higher ceilings, similar to hanging curtains.
Anything vertical will create an illusion of more height than there really is. It’s the same thing when you want to visually widen a space! You use horizontal lines which make a room feel bigger. There are many ways to visually trick the eye in design.
