We know you are all dying to know what will be trending for 2023 in the Interior Design world! As designers, we get to go to High Point Market in High Point, NC twice a year. At this market, we met with all the trade vendors and brands exclusive to interior designers and wholesalers (meaning they do not sell directly to consumers). The fall High Point Market is one of our favorites because all the new collections for the upcoming year and new trends by furniture and lighting makers are all released. We’re excited to share with you all the things we learned and observed at this event below, but please feel free to check out our Instagram @threesistersinteriors for more!
All the things we are going to list below have one underlying style between them – Organic Modern! If you’re asking yourself, “what is Organic Modern design?” well the answer really is in the name. By organic, we mean organic materials, shapes, and textures such as linen, ceramic, stone, wood, leather, curvy shapes, and lines. All these elements mixed with an elevated modern design is the perfect timeless look for years to come! We’re so excited that “timeless” is the style many people are going for. Now the moment you’ve been waiting for is here! Let’s get into the top 7 interior design trends for 2023.
1. Boucle and Mixed Textures in Furniture Pieces
One word, BOUCLE! If you haven’t started seeing Boucle or don’t know what it is, trust us when we say you will absolutely see it everywhere by next year. We couldn’t walk into a vendor showroom at High Point Market without at least one or more items made from Boucle. In our opinion, Boucle is absolutely stunning and pairs beautifully with any organic modern elements. Currently loving this boucle sofa from CB2.
Boucle is a looped yard technique and defined by Architectural Digest as “made from a series of looped fiber, or the fabric made from it. Wool is the most common fiber to undergo the technique, though cotton, linen, and silk have also been used for achieving the fabric’s textured hand.”
In addition to Boucle as a key trend, we saw a lot of furniture made from mixed textures such as leather, wood, rattan, and cane mixed with boucle. These textures blend really well together while bringing in a lot of the warm look and feel we see most people going for (more on that in trend #6 below).
2. Curvature
Curvy everything! We didn’t see one single squared sofa, not one! They didn’t stop at sofas either, it was curved accent chairs, dining chairs, mirrors, coffee tables, and lighting! The curvature makes a room feel more welcoming and helps offset that boxy look most homes have. Rounded furniture falls into the realm of organic modern design, and we are totally here for it! Not only is curvature an organic element, but really balances well with modern design. Sometimes modern can feel a little bit “cold” but the curvy element helps to balance out that hotel-like look that looks too pretty to touch or sit in. We love this trend and hope it never goes away!
3. Oversized Statement Pendants
Lighting sets the mood in any design and helps to tie in the look and feel of any room. Oversized statement pendants are the newest trend we are seeing, and we love that this is a thing! Your line of sight naturally gets drawn to pendants because they typically hang lower than flush lights or chandeliers. Not only are statement pendants popular but bring that wow factor to high-end interior design. We do want to warn you that they might not pair well with smaller rooms or low ceilings, but please remember to scale accordingly.
4. Back to Black and Grided Windows
Black is the new black! Finally! We are seeing a ton of black furniture such as dressers, sideboards, barstools, chairs, and coffee tables. Black pairs well with nearly anything and ties well with organic modern design. Black is a timeless color (we know you probably have a ton of black clothes from years ago that you still wear today!) and not only is it timeless, but also looks very modern. We are seeing black-bordered bedframes, and lots of arched cabinets (there we go with curvature again) made with wood, black, and glass, and mixed with earthy textures in barstools. Black accessories are also front and center of organic modern design. We are seeing black curved vases, looped candlestick tapers, and tons of black framed artwork.
5. Mural Wallpaper
Mural wallpaper is absolutely stunning, especially when it wraps around an entire room! Murals have always been a big thing in the exterior of buildings, however, now we are seeing them inside homes and really taking interior design to the next level. One of our favorite examples of mural wallpaper is the Chris Loves Julia Study. I mean can we just take a moment in silence for how breathtaking this looks? It completely transformed the room and elevated the design with the bubble light chandelier. Have we ever shared with you guys how much we love bubble lights? This mural wallpaper is 10/10 on our list and we can’t wait to do a mural design for our clients in the future.
6. Warm, Earthy, and Neutral
Warm, earthy, and neutral is the definition of timeless! There are a lot of outdoor-inspired designs these days starting with bringing in lots of tall faux trees with tons of leaves and greenery. A few years ago, you’d see small plants scattered throughout a house but now we’re seeing ALL the tall faux tree combinations in every room. In addition, we saw some gorgeous travertine coffee tables and end tables that look high-end and pair well with organic modern design.
At High Point Market, almost every single showroom had lots of warm hues throughout. Most furniture and accent colors were made from warm materials, and we also saw consistent warm lighting throughout the showrooms and even warm white paintings. This is your sign to paint your walls a warm white if you haven’t already! If you are into color, Sherwin Williams recently named Redend Point their 2023 color of the year. It’s a muted minimal, calming, and earthy color and we see the direction they’re headed in.
7. Clean Paneling
Keyword – clean! We are seeing less and less geometric patterned wall paneling these days. We believe wainscoting and wall paneling with clean lines is also a truly timeless look that keeps things interesting. We saw that the higher-end showrooms were also doing a lot of wooden slat walls that scream minimalist at their finest (again bringing the outdoors inside). Crate & Barrel sells these wooden slats in a beautiful White Oak and Smoke color that looks amazing as a backdrop, similar to the photo above.
All these trends are absolutely beautiful and it’s so hard to choose our favorites! We will definitely, be incorporating these trends into our future client designs!
